There are constantly new recovery approaches being developed, studied, and implemented. One approach that has gotten a lot of traction is the use of Compression Therapy. While the technology behind Compression Therapy has constantly been upgraded, the modality at its core has been around for quite some time. Are you familiar with the acronym, RICE? Rice stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Compression is a key component to RICE for both acute and chronic issues. At Stretch we use a Compression Therapy unit developed by a company called NormaTec. At Stretch, with the incorporation of a gravity chair, we combine both Compression and Elevation at the same time. The process of a session at Stretch is simple. We first start by having our members sit on a chair that can be tilted back to elevate the lower body. Next, we zipper up the NormaTec leg sleeve that covers the entire leg. The NormaTec unit, which attaches via a hose to the sleeves, uses compressed air to create a pulsing sensation to reduce inflammation, massage the legs, circulate blood flow, and flush the lactic acid buildup after a workout.
The benefits of the Compression Therapy consist of:
- Reducing recovery time
- Reducing soreness
- Range of motion and flexibility
- Reduces swelling and inflammation
- Increasing circulation
- Flushing out lactic acid build up
